At least 20 people, including four police officers, were injured in clashes between protesters and police on Saturday in Andahuaylas, a city in southern Peru. The Ombudsman's Office stated that it was working with health personnel to ensure that the injured received proper medical care at the city hospital, but did not provide further details on their injuries. It also reported that some people had been detained, but did not specify how many. The National Police reported that two officers who had been taken captive by the protesters were released and were receiving medical evaluation. The cause of the protest in Andahuaylas is currently unknown, but the city is one of several in Peru where residents have demonstrated in support of former President Pedro Castillo, who was ousted earlier this week. Castillo was arrested for alleged rebellion and impeached by lawmakers on Wednesday after attempting to dissolve Peru's Congress and call for new elections. The move was described as a coup by Peruvian lawmakers, and Dina Boluarte was sworn in as the new president after a majority of the 130-member Congress voted to impeach Castillo.
