Jade Janks, a 39-year-old interior designer, was found guilty of murdering her former stepfather, Thomas Merriman, on Wednesday. The jury in Vista, California reached their verdict after less than a day of deliberation. Janks was convicted of first-degree murder after being accused of drugging and strangling Merriman on December 31, 2020, following the discovery of more than 100 nude pictures of herself on his computer. Janks, who had consensually taken the photos with her then-boyfriend over a decade ago, claimed throughout the trial that she did not commit the murder and that Merriman had died of an illness. The prosecutor in the case argued that the murder was "by design" and not an accident. It is unclear how Merriman, a local butterfly activist, gained access to the private photos, one of which was reportedly his screensaver.
