Early this morning, a small 1m asteroid, known as Sar2667, exploded over the English Channel upon entering the Earth's atmosphere, creating a shooting star and an 'airburst'. The event was visible across most of southern England and Wales, and even as far south as Paris, France. According to Mark Boslough, an American physicist and airburst specialist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, while airbursts of this size occur several times per year, they are rarely discovered in advance. In fact, this is only the seventh time in history that an airburst of this size has been discovered in advance.
