The car crash that took the life of six-month-old Cristian Uvidia in West Garfield Park has raised concerns about crime in the area and the need for tougher consequences for criminals. The accident involved a stolen Hyundai Sonata, with four occupants who were reportedly joyriding when they hit a white Ford pickup truck carrying a family of four. The impact of the collision caused both vehicles to crash into a nearby house.
Shaun Walker, a resident who witnessed the accident, quickly learned that one of the children in the truck was not breathing. He and other bystanders quickly performed CPR on the baby, waiting for the ambulance to arrive. "We were able to get the breath back into the baby," Walker said. "But it's devastating to hear that he passed."
The mother of Cristian Uvidia also suffered facial fractures in the crash, while another child was hospitalized for further tests. Relatives of the family expressed their anger and frustration over the incident, and the fact that the stolen car was involved.
"The fact that his life was taken in one second for somebody that was like looking for a stolen car - as if his life amounted to a price of a car," said Annelisse Rivera, a relative of the victim. "Our lives were impacted completely forever. The joy of our life was taken. His life was priceless."
Meanwhile, the two occupants of the stolen vehicle who were taken into custody were only charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle, which is a misdemeanor. The light punishment has sparked criticism from some who believe that the city is too soft on crime.
"We have to start holding people accountable for their actions," said community activist Andrew Holmes. "When you take a life, there should be a stronger penalty for it."
The incident has reignited debates about the need for stricter law enforcement measures and consequences for criminal activity in Chicago.
