The city of Baltimore is selling ‘city-owned’ vacant homes for as low as 1$ apiece to ‘revive struggling neighborhoods.’
The program was passed by Mayor Brandon Scott and will allow both individual buyers and community land trusts to buy the city-owned vacants for as low as $1.
Over 13,000 homes in the city are currently vacant due to high rates of violent crime.
The city now owns close to 1,000 of them.
Homeowners can purchase the city-owned vacant homes for $1 but must maintain them as their primary residence for at least five years.
Small nonprofits can also purchase the homes for $1,000 apiece while Developers and larger nonprofits would need to pay $3,000.
Buyers are eligible for home repair grants of $50,000 if pre-approved for a construction loan.
Prospective buyers need at least $90,000 in assets as many of the vacant homes are not up to code.
